Golden Hour in Los Angeles
Golden hour — the soft, warm window just after sunrise and before sunset — is the most coveted light in photography. Blue hour follows at dusk and precedes dawn, wrapping scenes in cool, even tones. Chasing Light tracks both windows in real time, so you're always ready when the sky turns.
Golden Hour in Los Angeles
Los Angeles faces the Pacific Ocean to the west, providing one of the cleanest western horizons of any major city. Combined with California's typically low-humidity air, this produces vivid sunset golden hours year-round. The Santa Ana wind events (typically October–January) clear the marine layer and deliver the most saturated sunset colours of the year.
The city's low density and spread-out topography means Golden hour light travels long distances without obstruction. The Hollywood Hills cast sharp shadows eastward at sunset, while the ocean-facing slopes stay lit well into the blue hour period. The Pacific Coast Highway corridor is especially responsive to the low-angle coastal light.
Best Places for Golden Hour Photography in Los Angeles

- ›El Matador State Beach — sea stacks, arches, and tide pool reflections

- ›Venice Beach skate park — geometric concrete forms in low western light
- ›Point Dume (Malibu) — sea cliff facing west over the Pacific
Photography Tips
- ›Griffith Observatory faces south with downtown LA to the left and the Hollywood sign to the right. Morning golden hour from the east lights the observatory's copper dome; sunset from the west silhouettes the Hollywood Hills behind it.
- ›El Matador State Beach (Malibu): sea stacks and arches 60km north of downtown. Low tide at golden hour creates tide pools that mirror the sky between the rocks.
- ›The Getty Center (elevated 270m above Bel Air): faces southeast over the entire LA basin. Evening golden hour from the terraces shows the city dissolving into warm haze toward Long Beach and beyond.
- ›Venice Beach boardwalk runs north–south facing west. The concrete skate park casts sharp geometric shadows at the 10-15 minute window just before sunset — best in autumn when the sun sets slightly south of due west.
- ›Mulholland Drive overlooks face south over the San Fernando Valley. In summer, the valley fills with marine layer at night and the golden hour sun rises above a sea of fog — a scene that doesn't exist at sea level.
Seasonal Changes
Santa Ana wind season (October–January) produces the most photogenic conditions: crystal air, dramatic cumulus clouds that catch the full colour range of golden hour, and the famous "fire sunsets" when controlled burns are visible on the horizon. Summer marine layer creates diffuse pastel mornings — beautiful for soft light but lacking drama.
